The dissertation is intended to give a detailed analysis of Wu Wenying’s Ci. The research approach is intensive reading. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the subtle information in Wu Wenying’s Ci, and make a new interpretation of Wu’s text. The principle part of this dissertation is divided into three chapters.Chapter1is centered on the analysis of the disposition of the images in Wu Wenying’s Ci. It is revealed that there are two basic types of disposition of the images in Wu Wenying’s Ci:superposition and juxtaposition. The two types of disposition helps to create mainly two effects:one is that images are being disposed in an ever moving status, and the other is that images are represented with magical and elusive attributes.Chapter2shows concern over the issue of time in Wu Wenying’s Ci. This chapter includes two main parts. Part1exhibits two phenomena related to the issue of time. Phenomenon1is that the latter parts of Wu Wenying’s Ci constantly responds to the former parts; phenomenon2is that in Wu Wenying’s Ci, affairs that happened before is often arranged before affairs that happened after. Part2analyzes the meanings of the above two phenomena. Phenomenon1is an emphasis on "the reservation of the past"."The reservation of the past" justifies an "overlapping" rather than a "replacing" relationship between the former texts and the latter ones in Wu Wenying’s Ci. This "overlapping" relationship coincides with Roman Ingarden’s idea of "temporal perspective", which is raised during Ingarden’s investigation of the time issues in literary works. The coincidence shall prove that the "overlapping" relationship is not only a personal charateristic manifestation of Wu Wenying’s attitude toward time, but also a general rule that applies to every piece of literary works."Overlapping" relationship also complies with Zhangyan’s idea of Qibaoloutai and gives Zhang’s idea a new interpretation through comparison."Overlapping" also confirms Wu Wenying’s identification of the reservation of the past by expressing the nostalgia towards things from the past. Phenomenon2emphasizes the present being of the past. A probe into the present being of the past shall lead to a conclusion that the representational time of literary works is different from the real time in our real life. Wu Wenying’s Ci evidently exposes the conclusion to his readers. Wu Wenying somewhat attains the freedom of controlling of the time by controlling the representation time of his Ci. A further discussion shall be around the topic that after attaining some extent of freedom in representation time, Wu wenying’s choice between representational time and real time and its ensuing effects.Chapter3is about the structure of meaning in Wu Wenying’s Ci, This chapter includes two parts. Part1shows that the "signified" level of meaning and the "signifying" level of meaning of Wuwenying’s Ci promote his Ci’s meaning respectively. Part2points out that the reason why Wang Guowei never gave Wu Wenying’s Ci a high evaluation is that there is a fundamental conflict between Wuwenying’s Ci’s structure of meaning and Wang Guowei’s poetics.
