Translation Practice Report Based On The Paper Of Mathematical Contest In Modeling

This report is based on the entry paper of Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)2013Water Strategy for China. In the report the translation problems are case-studied.The function of MCM is to collect the methods and approaches of the students fromdifferent countries to solve the practical problems. Through the evaluation, the bestsolution and the outstanding paper can be determined. In this paper translated, theparticipants have presented the best water strategy to solve the water deficiency in Chinaby constructing mathematical models.The papers in MCM belong to the scientific papers which are mainly focusing on theaccuracy of the information transfer. Therefore, the accuracy and the specification of thelanguage are the core purpose of this translation. Functional Equivalence theory requeststhat when reading, the target readers should have the similar feelings to the writer. Withthe guidance of this theory, the words and sentences have been studied in this translation.In order to achieve the goal of the translation, several translation methods, such as wordconversion, word adding, word reduction and free translation etc, are adopted to make thereaders understand the writing intent and attain the objective of the communication of thescience and technology. In addition, it also can serve as a reference for the similartranslations in the same field.Translation is a process of recreation. In this practice, it can be figured out that as agood translator the writing intent and the content of the original should be comprehendedso as to create an accurate and perfect translation, which requires sufficient preparationfor translation, careful proofreading and suitable translation methods besides theexcellent proficiency of English and Chinese.
