From ancient to modern times, Nanjing, one of the historical and cultural cities,has been imagined and pictured through various literary means by numerous writers,in this way, Nanjing,“the city in literature”, forms diverse appearances and richcivilization through the literary world. Taking Ye Zhaoyan’s imagination of Nanjingand expression of experience as starting points, this paper will discuss how writersimagine and construct Nanjing by means of literature through the experience oftradition and modern, and how Nanjing is described in Ye Zhaoyan’s literary works.On the one hand, this paper will dig the conflicting and blending between traditionalculture and modern experience in the process of construction of Nanjing, even in thatof modern cities in China, aiming to analyze the shaking effects and spiritualcontradiction of contemporary writers represented by Ye Zhaoyan, which is broughtby their hesitation and linger between tradition and modern. On the other hand,through the Nanjing imagination in Ye Zhaoyan’s literary works, the papersummarizes the cultural character and spiritual temperament of Nanjing and discusseshow they are specifically presented by local residents, especially those narrators andtheir works, in this way, the vision in studying the theme “the city in literature” isbroadened. The paper further discusses the interactive relations between city andhuman, and city and literature, attempting to seek for answer to the question “how toimagine Nanjing for contemporary writers”.
