This is a translation project report of the fourth chapter of Modern China: A Very Short Introduction written by Rana Mitter, professor of History and Politics of Modern China at Oxford University. The report is divided into four parts. Part One is a brief description of the translation project report, including background of the project, and significance of the project, as well as a layout of the report. Part Two consists of an introduction to the author, main content and information of the source text. Part Three extends to discuss specific translation techniques, such as conversion and sentence division, which are adopted to solve the difficulties encountered in the process of the translation. Part Four is the conclusion, which sums up implication and lessons drawn in the translation practice, while the translator is hoping to provide reference for the translation of texts of the same type.
