The paper is made on the basis of translation practice of Marathon Company’s 2013 Annual Report. The translation report includes four parts: task description, process description, case analysis and the conclusion, of which first two parts are a comprehensive description of translation practice. In the third part the writer attempts to explore the reasons of applying semantic and aesthetic compensating and the ways of using translation methods in the informative text.According to Newmark’s text strategy, the selected text belongs to the informative text. It has three characteristics. Firstly, there are many simple phrases in the text which need to be made some aesthetic compensating during translation. Secondly, there are some short phrases or sentences which need contextual semantic compensating. Thirdly, there are some long phrases and sentences. If they are translated literally, there will be some meaning losses and readers will be confused. Therefore, to present the meaning of the original text really, semantic and aesthetic compensating is needed.This paper concludes that the translator can use unique language methods to deal with those words or sentences which are hard to translate directly. These methods include: contextual amplification, division and combination, annotation and word order adjustment. And semantic compensation plays an important role in the informative text.
