This thesis is a report and analysis of the E-C translation project of excerpts from Women,Work, and Clothes in the Eighteenth-Century Novel, analyzing various problems posed in the translation, the solutions offered, and the E-C translation skills acquired. After an in-depth analysis of the language features and the main function of the original text, this thesis decides to apply Translation Compensation Strategies proposed by outstanding translators represented by Hervey and Higgins in the E-C translation.Various compensation strategies are used so as to compensate the information that might be omitted or reduced in the E-C translation concerning the following aspects, namely, culture, syntax, pragmatics and aesthetics. With a detailed study of various compensating methods, supported by the specific E-C translation examples taken from this translation practice, this thesis demonstrates that proper application of Translation Compensation Strategies may facilitate the translator to accurately transfer the information contained in the original text while simultaneously adapt to the conventions of Chinese grammar and pragmatics.
