| Margaret Sanger, the sponsor of the American birth control movement, world fbirth control movement leaders.In 1922 and 1936, she came to China to deliver her birth control theory.In the 1920s and 1930s,intellectuals sparked a heated debate,and has had a pround impact on Chinese society.Shen Bao, as one of the four newspaper during The Republic of China, recorded major historical events in Chines modern history occurred at home and abroad, showing the trajectory of the development of Chinese modern history. Shen Bao’s reports about Mrs.Sanger clearly demonstrated in the course of cross-cultural mutual penetration of Chinese and Western cultures, mutual integration process.A newspaper mainly consists of three parts:news, news commentary, and advertisement. In this paper, the material mainly comes from Shen Bao’s news reports about Mrs.Sanger, the comment on Mrs.Sanger and newspaper advertisementg on Mrs.Sanger. The research of the paper using text analysis tries to show how western thoughts come into China in Chinese modern history, what kind of pattern to spread in China, how the collision between Chinese and western culture in the communication process. In this paper, chapter layout is as follows:The first chapter mainly introduces the life of Mrs.Sanger and her thoughts about birth control.Meanwhile, it explores the social background before Mrs.Sanger came to China.The social background includes some intellectuals deeply worried about China’s large population and the spread of western theory of population in China. Also the background closely related to the social psycholog of incline to the new fashions in the May 4th period.Intellectuals established a new value system through a criticism of the old feudal ethics.The second chapter uses text analysi to explaine reports of Shen Bao about Mrs.Sanger’s visit to China. Shen Bao attempts to seek balance in conflict of power field and audience field,and shows the conflict between the inner character and discourse construction in the process of coding.As a mass media, news narrative discourse must be objective and neutral, but constrained by traditional ideas,there is a deviation between reports about Mrs.Sanger and facts.The third chapter mainly analyzes the birth control theory was introduced into China by the masses media, intellectuals at that time how to "decode".In April 1922,Mrs.Sanger came to China,brought birth control theory for China.This violently hit the Chinese traditional ethics and fertility ideas. Subsequently Shen Bao emerged many comments about birth control,which is called the audience decoding in the process of transmission.But Shen Bao’s comments basically belong to the "dominant hegemony" and"consultation"decoding.Influenced by the thoughts of nationalism, and some of intellectual elite believes that a large population is reason for Chinese poverty and backwardness, and birth control can not only improve the race, can also make the country rich and strong.The rise of Women’s Liberationin in the May 4th period, also played a role in fueling some feminists want women’s access to reproductive self-determination shine through consciousness, and thus realize the life and work of dominance.Under the influence of the omnipotence of science thinking, the intellectual elite to put on birth control theory scientific "cloak" in order to counter the traditional ethics.The fourth chapter mainly discusses the discours behind the advertisement on Mrs.Sanger.Published in the daily lot of advertisement is an important part of the Shen Bao, because it is directly related to the main source of Shen Bao.Mrs.Sanger’s visit was over, there were traders use "Mrs.Sanger" symbol for his goods propaganda.Mrs.Sanger gradually became the "spokesman" of birth control medication, birth control apparatus, hospitals and movie.There are many birth control items under the banner of the name Mrs.Sanger.Meanwhile, some magazines and books which introduces the ideas of Mrs.Sange are also advertise on newspapers.Advertising using the fame of "Mrs.Sanger" to open the sale of goods, at the same time, "Mrs.Sanger" was through advertising, to achieve the knowledge from the transfer of the elite to the public.Birth control did not bring the lower people’s personal benefits,because in the books there is no effective method, birth control drugs were beyond the capacity of the ordinary people.The fifth chapter explores the impact of Mrs.Sanger on Mass Culture. Under the mass media widely publicized, "Mrs.Sanger" is not confined to the intellectual elite, is no longer confined to academic theory level, has been accepted by the public as a part of social culture. More importantly, "Mrs.Sanger" is or has affected part of the thinking mode of the crowd. But we regret that mode of thinking is not into actual actions.This paper expects to provide a perspective on cross-cultural study of modern China,enrich the connotation of the study of intercultural communication. |
