| With the coming of the Internet era, the world renowned media have opened their own English news websites, and reading online English news has become a new way for people to obtain information. As an indispensable section of the online news, entertainment news has been accepted by the public. It has been cared about and paid attention to by people for its properties of knowledge, art and entertainment, which make it have the value of news. However, when reading the entertainment news, many readers may find some differences between Chinese entertainment news and the British one, even those two news concerned to the same entertainment topic. In order to help readers know the causes of those differences and grasp the world entertainment information efficiently, it is necessary to do a comparative research between Chinese entertainment news and British one.The thesis aims to make a comparative analysis between Chinese online English entertainment news and that of Britain from graphological, lexical, syntactic and textual levels by applying modern linguistics and stylistic theories. The thesis is based on two groups of news corpora, the first one is selected from Chinese English news official websites, including China Daily, Xinhua News Agency and Twenty-first Century English news websites; the second one is chosen from British English news official websites, containing Times, Reuters and Mirror. In a word, there are thirty pieces, fifteen pairs of entertainment news, and each pair of the news is related with the same entertainment topic.The following questions assist much in completing the thesis:1. Based on the same entertainment topic news report, what are the similarities and differences between Chinese online English entertainment news and British one in graphological, lexical, syntactic and textual levels? And for what reason are these differences caused?2. What are the reasons of those differences between two kinds of entertainment news? What significance does knowing those reasons have?The major findings of this thesis are concluded as follows:On graphological level:a large number of pictures are employed both in Chinese entertainment news and British one due to the uniqueness of the internet space; the average length of paragraph is longer in British entertainment news; the punctuation mark is used more frequently in Chinese entertainment news.On lexical level:the fuzzy words appear more frequently in British entertainment news; the compounding word is used frequently in Chinese and British entertainment news; the average length of words is longer in British entertainment news, it also suggests that those words are more complex.On syntactic level:the compound sentences are widely utilized in Chinese entertainment news; the sentences are more complex in British entertainment news; active voice is employed more frequently in entertainment news.On textual level:the average length of text is longer in British entertainment news, which also reflects British entertainment news are more detailed, and most of British and Chinese entertainment news are written in chronological order.To state briefly, similarities as well as differences exist between Chinese and British English entertainment news, and the author gives some explanations to those differences from the perspectives of language, thinking mode and point of emphasis respectively.The author hopes this study can help readers have a better understanding of the stylistic features of Chinese and British Entertainment News, and master the entertainment news reading skills. She also expects this research can help English learners to appreciate English entertainment news from different angles, and help them have a deeper understanding on the different cultures between China and Britain at the same time. In addition, the author hopes this research can enrich entertainment news study and provide enlightenment for the entertainment news teaching and translating. |
