With the development of international exchanges, China and other countries promote each other and maintain close contacts in various aspects. Political publicity translation plays an important role in the communication. In order to make the world better understand China and promote international exchanges, translators should pay attention to the translation of political texts. Report to the Eighteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China consists of politics, economy, culture, education and all aspects of social life, which is of great significance to the development of the nation. It is certain that the English translation of The Report(abbreviated from Report to the Eighteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China) is an authoritative source for international community to understand the major policies of China.Under the guidance of the German functionalist theory, the author analyzes the English translation of The Report, sums up the characteristics of the political text translation from linguistic features, and actively explores the translation strategies: amplification, restructuring, free translation. Official translation of The Report is the wisdom crystallization of China’s most outstanding translators and the medium by which China expresses attitude and policy towards foreign affairs. The translation project takes the official translation as reference, comparatively analyzes the official translation and the author’s translation, and finds the demerits of the author ’s translation so as to improve the translation skills. There are four chapters in the thesis. Chapter One explains the background, objective, significance and structure of the thesis. Chapter Two introduces preparation of the report, including theoretical preparation and pre-translation preparation. Chapter Three analyzes the text type of The Report from the perspective of content, form and appeal and its significance to translation research. This chapter also studies the lexical feature, syntactical feature and rhetorical feature of The Report. Chapter Four concludes with a summary of the major findings, provides a reference for translators engaged in political text translation studies and points out that the author should make further improvement in translation.
