Japan and Philippines as an organic part of Chinese peripheral diplomacy, its style is important to the East Asian strategy which needs to pay more attention to this subject. After the World War II, due to Japanese made brutal and severe trauma to the Philippines local people, it caused anti-Japanese sentiment and cut off their bilateral relations. However, Japan-Philippines relationship had experienced the historic transformation which from isolation to restoration and to development during the Cold War.As the Cold War pattern formation, American dragged Japan who was occupied alone by it and Philippines who maintained special relations with it into its system to curb the expansion of the Soviet forces in the Asia-Pacific region. At the beginning of the Cold War, Japan and Philippines gradually embarked on the road of diplomatic relations through the solution of war compensation which based their requirement and under the promotion of the American. After the establishment of diplomatic relations, they built economic, political and cultural relations to repair bilateral ties which based on the same coping mode and interests under the Cold War framework from 50s to 70s of the 20th century. In 1977, Japan introduced Fukuda doctrine as a new policy of Southeast Asia which due to the international situation changed and the ASEAN grown stronger. It opened a new development period to bilateral relations. Under the loose of Cold War, Japan and Philippines took a new communication mode in the political, economic and cultural area more flexibility and enjoyed a booming trend to the end of the Cold War which determined the basic direction of Japan-Philippines relation.The implementation of Japan-Philippines relation development attributed to cooperate with the American Asia-Pacific strategy and based on respective national interests. Throgh their efforts, Japan went back Philippines again to get its market and resources, Philippines economy recovered and society ordered, but meanwhile it strengthened dependency to Japan. Nonetheless, for the disparities in economic strength of two countries as well as in special international environment, Japan-Philippines relations were still the unequal relationship between developed and developing countries.The research combed the clue of Japan-Philippines relationship during the Cold War from the historical perspective and combined with the knowledge of international relations, economics and other disciplines. Meanwhile, it also focused on the reasons of bilateral relations development from the perspective of geopolitics and international politics. The thesis included an introduction and four chapters. The first chapter reviewed the Japan-Philippines relations before the Cold War which looked back to the relationship before World War Ⅱ and basic situation during the World War Ⅱ. The second chapter emphasized on the developing venation which was divided into three stages, the normalization of Japan-Philippines relation, their relations preliminary developed, their relations achieved a multi-level development after Fukuda doctrine. The third chapter focused on the analysis of main factors influencing the development of Japan-Philippines relations during the Cold War from both internal and external perspective. The fourth chapter described the affections of their relationship, the positive effects of development and the problems left behind in the developing process.
