China had been to the Bronze Age since from Yin dynasty, and became well-recognized for its exquisite manufacturing. Ancient China began to do researches on the bronze inscription in Han dynasty, which rose in Song and prospered in Qing dynasty. Song was the real leader of researching inscription and played an essential part in this field. Generally speaking,Scholars in Song dynasty lay particular stress on the following two parts. The first part is to make notes for pictures. the second part is to give translation. This exploring way is still well-functioned today. Lv Dalin, a very famous scholar in exploring bronze inscriptions. He was a very famous economist, epigraphy and scholar who lead fashions of exploring bronze inscription in Sony dynasty. His work Kao Gu Tu focuses on bronze inscriptions’notes and translations, his another book Kao Gu Tu Notes on inscriptions’collection, both play a roughly important role in epigraphy history. This essay is mainly divided into four parts as follows:The first chapter "introduction". This part has two thesis included, introducing related questions of the object; Firstly, general information about Lv Dalin’s exploring bronze inscrption for recent thirty years and other scholars’misses in this field. Thus, it brings out the second thesis--the exploring ways and their values; The second chapter "Lv Dalin and Kao Gutu"; this part introduces basic information of Lv Dalin and his work Kao Gutu, which involves two short points. First of all, it gives a general introduction of Lv Dalin’s learning background, experiences and academic success in the whole life. Meanwhile, some discoveries through exploring his tomb are easily noted down; Later, there systematically presents the motivation of writing this book, its stylistic rules and reputation in this field. This book has its special views in differentiating Taoists and Legalists’ exploration. From the studies, Kao Gutu has catalogued 224 pieces that have recordings about inscriptions, but truly collected 234 pieces in which 119 pieces has obvious notes about inscription.94 of them are noted in the Collection. We can have a brief overview through its catalogue; it is ranked for ten volumes and each volume ranked according to their species. Because this book was published for a long time and has different versions, it has to be collected in Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing and modern types; The third chapter and the forth chapter Kao Gutu and Related Notes and Analysis. It has two parts, focusing on analyzing materials, especially 13 pieces recorded in this book. This part aims to present Mr. Lv’s contributions on his achievement of inscription and plan to detailed record and state the Inscription of Kao Gu on the foundation of the ccollection copies, hoping give some references to following scholars; The fifith chapter, Lv Dalin’s Exploration on Bronze Inscription. Three parts. First parts mainly refer to Lv Dalin’s views of words. He makes a great number of contributions to the development of writing theory and the related theory of variant forms of Chinese characters. The first chapter respectively analyses the development and evolution of the Chinese characters and so on. The second chapter contains Lv Dalin’s research on Inscriptions, concluding the Inscriptions research methods of Lv Dalin. These methods mainly include the comparison analysis of the images in Shuo Wen, Literature surveying and Chinese character component analysis and so forth. Finally, the disadvantages of the research methods are summarized.The thesis completely reveals the achievement of Lv Dalin’s Exploration on Bronze Inscription and Bronzes dating research at the beginning of Song dynasty. Although there are many disadvantages in Dalin’s Exploration, which has no influence in making him a remarkable expert in paleography.
