A Translation Report To Ordinary Wisdom From The Principle Of Faithfulness And Equivalence

The Sakya Gnomic Verses is a representative work of Tibetan gnomic verses and has been translated into many languages. Translated by John T. Davenport, Sallie D. Davenport and Losang Thonden, Ordinary Wisdom——Sakya Pandita’s Treasury of Good Advice(hereafter refers to as Ordinary Wisdom) is one of the five English versions of Sakya Gnomic Verses. Ordinary Wisdom not only includes all 457 verses of Sakya Gnomic Verses, but also its commentary A Hive Where Gather Bees of Clear Understanding written by Sakya Khenpo Sangyay Tenzin, which makes it possesses distinguished text characteristics and receives special attention from specialists on national classics translation.Including the introduction, study and summary of the translation task, this translation report is based on the writer’s translation task of the English to Chinese translation of Ordinary Wisdom and divided into four parts, namely, the introduction of translation task, the description of translation process, the analysis of translation cases and the summary of translation practice.The first part briefly introduces the background of translation task, the nature of the text and the translation requirements. The second part fully describes the preparation and process of translation. Guided by the principle of faithfulness and equivalence, the third part emphatically analyzes the translation cases of gnomic verses,culture-loaded words and sentences in the text. The fourth part summarizes the post-translation effect, the post-translation reflection and enlightenment in later translation practice, and mainly reflects on the retranslation values of national cultural classics and publication of Chinese classics translation. In the paper, the writer aims to explore the translation methods of Tibetan Gnomic Verses and tries to provide reference for solving similar problems.
