A Study Of Zhong Jing Wen’s Poetry

The career of Zhong Jingwen has been the manifestation of the effort of more than a scholar. We see here a master in folklore, a prestigious essayist and, more importantly, a poet with sound achievements in both "modern-style" poetry and new poetry.Based on literature study, the author of this thesis strives to conduct systematic textual analysis, contextualizing the poetry in the poet’s life experience as well as in his evolutional phases of writing, in two categories:"modern-style" poetry and new poetry.In the thesis, Zhong’s "modern-style" poems are grouped into two types, narrative and memorial. Further categorization and in-depth analysis based on themes and textual analysis will follow. Given that cultural-revolution-themed "modern-style" poems are of great quantity and historical document value among Zhong’s works, a separate section will be dedicated to this theme.In terms of new poetry, this thesis will cover the following themes in Zhong’s works:daily-life narrative, pastoral poetry, political themes and other new poems, etc. Detailed analysis will be conducted with social background, personal experience, poetic theories home and abroad, and other factors taken into account.The final part of the thesis will be dedicated to the establishment of relationship between Zhong’s poetry and his life, unveiling the diversity, the grandness as well as the unity of tradition and modernity of the masterpieces of a great poet.
