The Collection of Tang Shi's Poetry (IdII ), Published by the People's Literary Press in September, 2003, collects most of tang's poems composed after his entering the circle of poets. They embody the style and features of Tang's poetical creation in an all-round way. So it is necessary to study the major themes and aesthetic characteristic of Tang's poetry as well as Tang's artistic style and techniques of expression based on the Collection. It is also necessary to study Tang's association with the Nine Leaves School -a school of poets. This essay is made up with five parts. Firstly the relationship between Tang and the Nine Leaves School is discussed. Their commonplaces of creative characteristics reflected by their early works, their similar theoretical views and creative fruits at that time. and their great achievements after their returning to the circle of poets in 1980s are strong evidences of Tang and the Nine Leaves School poets' suitability of being some of the evergreen leaves of the Tree of Poetry.Secondly, pondering over the reality in society and visioning and ideal life are considered as the major themes of Tang's poetry in this essay. In his poetry. Tang concerns himself with real life, describes social scenes, reflects features of his age, and expresses the poet's great longing for an ideal life. The beautiful future world and the splendid ideal of life are components of his high-spirited themes. Tang also has poems analyzing human's mind which embody the poet's strong sense of individual life. There are otherpoems firing people's imagination towards a pure aesthetic state of art, and they voice the poet's sublime ideal of art as if the poet was put in the realm of art and was intoxicating himself there.Thirdly, Tang's artistic style and features is generalized as "a deep river and a slightly rising leave," that is his style is the combination of realism, symbolism and romanticism, being pregnant with meaning, profound and solemn, and, at the same time, light, free and easy, and having flowing grace.Fourthly, in terms of techniques of expression, Tang is not only influenced by the traditional Chinese poems and C/, seeking the beauty of rhyming and diction, but also affected by western classical sonnets, emphasizing the beauty of stanzas and integral touching effect. He even absorbs some skills from western modern poems, for example, the method of being '"dramatic.'"Finally, the aesthetic characteristic of Tang's poetry is generalized as the individuality resulted from the mingling of Chinese and western artistic craftsmanship of poetry.Tang Shi, like other poets of the Nine Leaves School, is showing the quality of occupying an important position in the circle of poets.
