Review On The Relationship Between Cheng Zhai Style And Zen Since The Modern Times

This paper is a Commentary about the relationship between Cheng Zhai style and Zen since the modern times. It aims to sort out the development history and research status about the relationship between Cheng Zhai style and Zen since the modern times. On this basis, I will sum up the academic achievements and problems. The article uses the literature material method and statistical analysis method. The thesis consists of four parts: the introduction part、the first chapter、the second chapter、the third chapter. In the introduction part, The author will introduce Yang Wanli’s life、thoughts、literary creation process and so on. In the first chapter I will introduce the research work between Cheng Zhai style and Zen. It is divided into two periods:Based above period(from the modern times to 1979) and recovery period(from 1979 up to now). Based above period consists two periods,one is from the modern times tol949;the other is from 1949 to 1979. This chapter will detail the relationship between the findings of different historical periods, evaluate the achievements and limitations objectively. On the basis of the research achievements related to YangWanli,The second chapter will analyse the controversy of the relationship between Cheng Zhai style and Zen. Most of the Zen theorists will support the influence of zen on cheng Zhai limited in the category of mode of thinking, but from the point of practical discourse, you couldn’t see what is the difference between the way of thinking and the influence of religious faith. In other words, they think the influence of zen on Cheng Zhai style is comprehensive and essential. However some people think that Confucianism, Taoism, zen influenced Cheng Zhai style at the same time. Some people also think that Neo-Confucianism constitutes the essence of the impact on Cheng Zhai style. From the existing achievements, the academic community have different views on this issue. In fact, Zen theorists ignored a point that as a firm patriot a famous neo-confucianism Yang Wanli holds a hard critical attitude toward Zen at the same time in the study of Zen. As far as I know Yang Wanli learns Buddhism for Personal cultivation not for religious beliefs. This means that the influence of Zen on Cheng Zhai style is only in the way of thinking. The author think the formation of the Cheng Zhai style is not the result of Zen theory, but the the result of poet’s repeated hard practice. The third chapter mainly to summarize the full text, points out that the academic research’s achievements and limitations in order to provide the reference for Researchers in the future.This article is the first time in academia in the form of a single paper summarizing the analysis between Cheng Zhai style and Zen since the modern times. It has certain innovations. This paper analyzes academic research’s achievements and limitations about the relationship between Cheng Zhai style and Zen. It also provides the reference for researchers in the future.
