The breath-taking novel Up until this period, The River of Canglang by the famous writer Yan Zhen is a rarity in facing the direct reality which is deeply and heaivly thematic,aimed at the description of the fate of contemporary Chinese intellectuals,and considered as the divine comedy and elegy of contemporary intellectuals by critics. It boasts collectively Yan Zhen’s personal understanding of growing and love for intellectuals, basicly representing the narration model of growing novel,so it is a unique growing novel. It develops along the thread of the protagonist Chi Dawei’s becoming, he is a growing iamge,not a stereostyped one. The changing and developing courses of his ideas and characters are significative and central to the plots. Premised on the careful reading of the novel,this paper will do a deep research into the characteristics of growing novels presented in this novelfrom its conent,the protagonist life journey and narration structures,etc. The use of western theory of growing novel to interpret contemporary and current excellent noves is instrumental in acquiring an entirely new understanding of its connoation and significance. This paper divides into six parts. Preface comes first, giving a brief account of Yan Zhen’s life, main plots of The Rive of Canglang,the purpose and significance of the research. Chapter one is a systematic account of growing novel’s developing course which lays the foundation of the generalization of its defintions and basic characters and provides a systematically theoretical frame for this paper. Chapter two gives importance to the analysis of the protagonist’s growing journey consisting of four phases. The in-depeth analysis of his growing phases makes it possilbe for the readers to get a deep understanding of psychological crisis of Chinese intellectuals during the social transformation. Chapterthree gives priority to the discussion of the main growing factors of the protagonist Chi Dawei,including social factors,his life journey leader( postive and negative ones)who play an leading role during his growing process.Chapter four mainly analyses the novel’s narrating structures, including its narrating angles and unique open-ended ending.Conlusion summarizes the contens, sigficance, limitations of this paper and future research orienation.
