Classroom learning is the main way for overseas students to learn Chinese, while extracurricular learning is also an indispensable approach for them to learn Chinese. This thesis begins with the discussion on extracurricular learning of Chinese as the second language. Based on the extracurricular learning situation of overseas students at the International Education Schools of Anhui University and Anhui Normal University, after investigation and analysis, we have concluded some conclusions about extracurricular learning situation of overseas, and put forward relevant suggestions and spares no efforts to provides some new ideas for Chinese teaching at home and aboard.The paper consists of five parts.The first part is the preface, which gives an introduction to the current investigating status, goals, meanings and research methods of the teaching of the second language about extracurricular learning. The current investigating situation of extracurricular learning of the second language concentrates on three main aspects, namely, the investigation led by the teaching sector at home and aboard to extracurricular learning and extracurricular Chinese learning,and the investigation led by the foreign second language teaching sector to extracurricular learning. The investigating propose of this thesis focuses mainly on the following four aspects: providing suggestions for extracurricular learning, improving the Chinese communicating skills of overseas students, promoting classroom teaching and enhancing the quality of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The meaning of the investigation can help students make full use of the target language environment, make the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language more comprehensive and diversified, and create a good learning atmosphere.The second part suggests the necessity and feasibility of extracurricular learning for overseas students to learn Chinese. International curriculum for Chinese Language Education and Chinese language proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages are the verification of the necessity and feasibility of extracurricular learning. International curriculum for Chinese Language Education puts forward specific learning goals and requirements for learners at different levels, among these there are several aspects involving extracurricular learning. It also makes proper learning tasks and elaborate the necessity for overseas students to learn Chinese and Chinese culture. Chinese language proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages brings forward many specific learning demands and extracurricular learning ways and verifies the feasibility for Chinese learners to learn after school in the course of the second language learning.The third part investigates and analyses the situation of extracurricular learning of overseas students. There are two main functions in the third part. Firstly, it is responsible for designing questionnaires 1 and 2. Secondly it combines the results of quantitative and qualitative analysis together and states and explains the results of questionnaires.The fourth part is the enlightening of Chinese teaching which mainly consists of three aspects namely, faculty, universities and overseas students. Teachers need to fully arouse students’ interest in Chinese learning, so as to encourage them to learn autonomously after school. Universities are expected to practically organize cultural activities, habit-developing classes and other relative activities. Students should combine class learning with extracurricular learning to improve their self-learning ability.The fifth part is the conclusion, which summarize the main opinions and results in the paper, putting forward learning suggestions for overseas students, and pointing out the remaining deficiencies in the thesis.
