This thesis takes 43 overseas students from Central Asian countries of Shanghai International Studies University as survey respondents,who are upper intermediate Chinese learners.On the basis of the definition of learning autonomy,this research focuses on their autonomous learning ability from four aspects: self-efficacy and learning motivation,learning objectives and learning plan setting,learning strategies,learning monitoring and assessing.To explore the trend,specific circumstances of learning autonomy and the correlation between autonomous learning ability and Chinese academic records of the Central Asian students,questionnaires are given out to collect data.SPSS 13.0 is applied to make descriptive statistics,independent sample test and correlation analysis.The results of semi-structured interviews to teachers and students are taken as supplements of the research.The investigation results indicate:(1)Significant differences emerge among Central Asian students of different levels in two aspects of learning autonomy: selfefficacy and learning motivation,learning strategies;(2)As a whole,there is a significant positive correlation between autonomous learning ability and Chinese records of the Central Asian students;(3)In the four aspects of autonomous learning ability,the correlation between self-efficacy and learning motivation and Chinese records is the most significant,the use of learning strategies takes the second place,the third one is learning monitoring and assessing,and the correlation between learning objectives and learning plan setting and records is the weakest.According to the findings,this paper offers some proposals about training the autonomous learning ability of overseas students from Central Asian countries.To achieve the aim of improving their Chinese learning,teachers and students should make a point of autonomous Chinese teaching and learning.
