Ju Lian (1828-1904),styled himself Shi Gang, Gu Quan,AKA. As he ha d another name Ge Shan qiaozi, when he was old, he called himself Mr. Ge Shan. As the most important painter of flower and bird in the late Qing Dyna sty, his painting showed pastoral aesthetic value orientation which was full of i ndifferent and secular at the same time with civil meaning. Ju Lian pursued af flatus and subject matters in civil life and natural environment to create a grea t quantity painting which was well received. In his painting, we can not only notice civil meaning strongly and the Nature Feelings for elegance, Common C ustoms for lucky, and Retroism for odd, but also can we feel that painter’s hu manistic thought intensely which meanings the consciousness of life. Ju Lian t ook as the ancients’model and innovate new ways in flower and bird painting which was called and popularized The color with water to make a perfect fus ion with Mogu model that was an old ways in painting. It brought boundless power in flower and bird painting in later ages.In the late Qing Dynasty which was the end of the eighteenth Century to the late nineteenth Century approximately, Guangzhou which was located in s outh of Ling and as the coastal gateway and foreign trade achieved peak in ec onomic development. Because Guangzhou was far away from the central of Ch inese royal court’powerful rule and traditional cultures, it provided loose politi cal surroundings; what’s more, it supplied for abundant creative resources by n ature which was like spring all the year round and all the flowers was smile i n this area. And at the same time, Taoism speeded widely, and it affected the primary guiding ideology which advocated natural and devoted people in harm ony with our natural. In this context, literati and officialdom turn them face to natural and civil life from reciting poems. We can see it was full of civil me aning in their paintings.This article through the analyzing of social background, Ju Lian and his a rt works in he time of late Qing Dynasty, it focuses on the understanding abo ut civil and civil culture and Ju Lian’s painting style so that to prove the civil meaning which owned by Ju Lian’s painting, and to prove how much value f or reference and how effects he made about the development in Modern Flowe r and Brid Painting.
