As a representative of the Cresent School, Xu Zhimo is a great Chinese essayist and poet in the early 20 th century. He vigorously promoted new style poetry in vernacular Chinese and initiated the Metrical Movement which aims to pursue the regularity of form and harmony of rhythm, playing an indispensable role in the birth, development and improvement of new style poetry. Furthermore, he was good at poetic creation and had produced myriads of excellent poems.Besides being a poet, Xu is also an important poetry translator in his time. He translated over 80 poems and came up with some original theories on poetry translation, making great contribution to poetry translation both theoretically and practically. However, his identity as a translator is rarely known and studies on his poetry translation works are also scarce. Most of the scanty studies are from the perspective of linguistics.Nowadays, Translation Studies is taking a “cultural turn”. Under such background, with the Manipulation theory by Andre Lefevere as the theoretical framework, the thesis explores Xu’s poetry translation activity through case studies from the perspective of poetics and ideology and studies how Xu’s literature concept influence his poetry translation concept and activity. Through this study, the author concludes(1) Xu’s literature concept has obvious influence on his poetry translation concept and activity;(2) ideology and poetics have great influence on a translator’s translation. The author expects to make readers clear about the relation between a translator’s literature concept and his or her translation. However, for more comprehensive and profound analysis on this topic, more efforts from the others are needed.
