A Study On Ancient-Modern Characters Of YuPianJiaoShi

Hu Jixuan’s Yu Pian Jiao Shi is the first monumental work which collates and annotates the work---Yu Pian in general in the world until now. It has a high reference value in academy. The thesis analyzes the theme “ancient---modern characters” and writing styles and manners in Yu Pian Jiao Shi, and summarizes the relationship between the ancient characters and the modern ones from the shape, the pronounciation and the meaning in three aspects. The thesis also compares the similarities and differences of the ancient---modern characters in Shuo Wen Jie Zi Zhu and Yu Pian Jiao Shi, then evaluates Hu’s values of ancient---modern characters in Yu Pian Jiao Shi.The thesis firstly introduces the relevant concepts of Yu Pian Jiao Shi and the “ancient---modern characters” in summary. It has 1197 ancient---modern characters and 14 writing styles in this work. And we find that “A,B ancient---modern characters”are still the main writing style. Then we find there are 3 relations between the ancient characters and the modern ones in shape. Modern characters can be produced by adding or changing structural components from the ancient ones, or there is no connection at all between them in shape. The ancient characters and the modern ones can pronounce totally same or closely in pronounciation. Modern characters can undertake the original, the extend and the borrowed meaning of the ancient ones. Thirdly, it is the same in writing styles and writers’ recoginitions of the ancient--- modern characters in Shuo Wen Jie Zi Zhu and Yu Pian Jiao Shi, but different in numbers and contents. We can easily find that the studying result of ancient---modern characters in Yu Pian Jiao Shi is more abundant by contrast. Hu’s annotations are more systemic, the ending can be correlated with the beginning and also he cites various authorities which make it convincing. However, there are still some problems we cannot neglect, for example, some annotations are contradictory, or Hu didn’t point out some obvious ancient---modern characters. In general, one flaw can’ t obscure the splendor of Yu Pian Jiao Shi, it is still a valuable masterpiece.
