The study and quantitative investigation of the historical Chinese characters of the middle ancient times are indispensable to sum up the inheriting rules and developing types from ancient Chinese characters to modern Chinese characters as well as to build a library of historical Chinese characters, which accords with the practical development of Chinese characters. As the first dictionary of regular scripts, Yu Pian changed the explaining style beginning from Shuo Wen Jie Zi, in which seal characters are first explained and then official scripts, the calligraphy current in the Han Dynasty. From then on, Yu Pian becomes the model of dictionaries about regular scripts, so its status and influence are indispensable, too. Yu Pian is the earliest concourse of historical Chinese characters from ancient times to middle ancient times. It collects and arranges the historical Chinese characters of every period in regular scripts and makes their forms standardized. Due to these contributions, Yu Pian can be regarded as the coordinate to make a study on the historical Chinese characters. Though the historical Chinese characters in Yu Pian's edition of Song Dynasty have been standardized, which has many practical contributions and deep effect on the standardization of Chinese characters, their inside administrative levels are complicated and difficult to classify. That's why the experts of the past time only fix their attention on microcosmic examples, lack of systematic study as well as quantitative and qualitative analysis.This article makes a study on the historical Chinese characters in Yu Pian's edition of Song Dynasty. It mainly solves the problem of the structural relationship among the inside documents, makes an investigation of the administrative levels along with the supplementary situations of historical Chinese characters, and makes a description on the variant forms of Chinese characters in the same era and in different eras. The rules and principles that Chinese characters become better and better are also summed up in this article. The investigation and analysis of Chinese characters' usage of different times, the contrast among the dictionaries inheriting Yu Pian, and the reliable statistics can give a thorough delight on the standard effect and practical influence of Yu Pian's edition of Song Dynasty.
