The Study Of The Ethics Value Connotation In Zhang Yimou’s Film

Speaking of Chinese filmdom, Zhang Yimou is one of the figures that no one can pass by. Since the 1980s, Zhang Yimou, by virtue of many well-known films, including Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, has become a representative person of the fifth generation of directors in our country. From rural to urban and from history to reality, Zhang Yimou provided Chinese film audience as well as the world with a colorful image of China. For nearly 30 years, the movie legend he created is not only an important topic of the folk town, but also an important research object that cannot be neglected in academia. Zhang Yimou’s film production is not merely well known and welcome by domestic audience, moreover, his works are also arose widely attention on the international stage and win hundreds of international film industry award over the years. All of his efforts promote the communication of contemporary Chinese film and the world culture. In this sense, he is also a cultural ambassador.Although the domestic scholars have a fairly good research on the adapted novel, folk culture and strong aesthetic color embodied in Zhang Yimou’s film, few scholars pay close attention to the ethical value. However, Zhang Yimou’s film contains the profound thinking of ethic and morality under the horizon of ethics. Confucian culture has a deep influence on his works. In the film, Zhang Yimou creates emotional entanglement and conflict by family interpersonal relationships, in which he integrates family theme, historical theme and the moral theme into one. He destructs the film plot and moral evaluation through tragic narrative mode, which reveals the individual existence destiny in the changing time long by means of long-period of plot narrating. In his movie, what is consistent ever is the inheritance and rebellion of traditional Chinese ethic and moral concepts, as well as the transformation and construction of the ethical rules in new era, which are coordinate with movement of our national destiny since the modern times. In this sense, the purpose of this research is to systematically study the connotation of ethics value in Zhang Yimou’s film and to inspire more literary researchers with more ultimate concern of humanity, thereby bringing more artists pay attention to ethics and morality with the help of the unique cultural phenomenon of Zhang Yimou.This thesis adopts literature analysis and case analysis, on the one hand, by analysis and digging of past research literature of Zhang Yimou and his film itself, researchers found that a panoramic understanding of Zhang Yimou and his works is supposed to know as a Zhang Yimou film researcher; On the other hand, the deep meaning will be revealed through the analysis and evaluation of Zhang Yimou’s film. Taking "new millennium" (2000) as a cut-off point, This thesis, combining with specific works, interprets Zhang Yimou’s film and its intrinsic ethical values, and then analyzes the impact of ethical connotation on Chinese film and Chinese society.This paper, by interpreting the ethics and morality of Zhang Yimou’s film, breaks the traditional interpretation of audio-visual film art about Zhang Yimou’s film. From this brand new perspective, this thesis will be the first article that systematically researches on the ethics value connotation of Zhang Yimou’s film, which has certain value and significance to the interpretation of Zhang Yimou film theory.
