Comparative Discourse Analysis Based On The Theory Of Frame

Media do not reproduce the objective reality events, but create "Pseudo-Environment" to readers via different way. Therefore, it is very necessary to comparative analyze the news discourse of different media to reveal what the difference in the different constructed "Pseudo-Environment",what the hidden reasons behind and what effect might give to readers, etc. Based on the theory of frame and the case study of the "Missing Malaysis Plane", in order to reveal the different frame strategy of different media, this paper selects six representative newspaper of the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan(the People’s Daily, Xinmin Evening News, Wenhui News, the Oriental Daily, the Liberty Times, the China Times) to detailed study how different media present the same social event. Through analyzing the title of series news and the specific report of the same event, we find that "People", "Xinmin", "Wenhui" use episodic frame; "Orient", "Liberty", "China Times" use thematic frame. On the other hand, the representative media of mainland, Hongkong and Taiwan’s news frame also present their respective characteristics.This paper is divided into five chapters, the general content summary is as follows:Chapter 1 is the introduction part. It introduces the purpose of this study and analyzes the deficiency of current comparative media studies, then puts forward the research question and the value, and also introduces the case study and sample of this paper.Chapter 2 is the introduction of the theoretical basis and analysis path. According to the research object and purpose, this paper based on theory of frame, refers to the analysis orientation of "Frame List" and "Discourse Structure", selects news headlines and quotes as compare item, and then puts forward the analyzing route:one part is to comparative study the frame of series news headlines in different media while the other part focus on the specific reports to analyze the headlines and quotes in different media.Chapter 3 is the analysis of the series reports, which focusing on the headlines frame analysis to explore the proposition implication of headlines, and applies statistical tools to reveal the the different constructing frame strategies used by different media.Chapter 4 is a case study of a specific news report. In this chapter, this paper discusses the structure and meanings in the headlines and also analyzes the quotes in different reports to reflect the connotation of the hidden frame which echoes with the study results of Chapter 3.Chapter 5 is the conclusion part. This chapter summarizes the research results and further analyzes the possible causes of the different frame modes used by the six media. At last, it lists out three omitted issues of this research which need future further study.
