With the development of globalization, cultural exchanges attract more and more attention. In the cultural exchanges between China and France, literature translations and exchanges are an important part.Eileen Chang is a brilliant writer of contemporary Chinese literature. Red rose and white rose is one of her famous short stories. It is translated in French by Emmanulle Pechenart and published in 2001 in France. Since its publication, there are not many analysis and study about the author and her works; there is very little study of the texts of translation from the point of view of translation criticism. The subject of this study aims at the French translation of Red rose and white rose. The analysis method is from Lance Hewson’s An approach to translation criticism.First, this thesis studies Eileen Chang and her works’reception and research situations in China and abroad, in particular Red rose and white rose in France. Then, the author of the thesis presents briefly Lance Hewson’s translation criticism method. With this method, the author analyses the French translation from micro level to macro level in order to make a translation quality assessment. Finally, on the basis of the results of translation criticism, the author studies translation strategies and the translator’s position of Red rose and white rose.
