The Dilemma Of Independent Documentary—The Research About Its "Express Space"

"A country without documentaries is like a family without photo album". Though independent documentary filmmaker are trumpeting her purpose is just self-expression.They don’t need more expression space. But independent documentary filmmakers’ internal strong desire to express, the cultural value and social significance of independent documentaries itself, determine the purpose is not just a simple record or the photographer to amuse themselves,but to spread widely, thus touching more audience’s heart, and encouraging everyone to act, to think about what we can do to make the world better. But the real conditions restrictions; The limitations of the photographer’s own vision and understanding; the narrow screening channel and other factors make the photographer only do things in a small space. The lager social significance of independent documentary itself can not get stretched. This question puzzles the photographer, and also a pity in all independent documentary’filmmakers’heart.On the basis of limited sources and textual research, I hope to combine my limited thinking and experience,to learn from the two dimensions of the real social and the image social constructed by independent documentary, to consider in which way do independent documentary filmmaker express themselves, through the present to subaltern’s living condition, I want to show my thinking to this world and to myself. Thus leading to resonate with the audience, and then realize the existence of the problem, the responsibility and obligation we need to bear for the masses. In addition, in order to expand the expression space, to get greater communication effect, help more audience see the film.In these topic of filming, editing, screening and issuing, what do directors also need to consider, in the process of independent documentaries and promotion, what else can we learn and improve. These are the main problems I want to research in this paper.This paper is mainly divided into four chapters to write.The first chapter is introduction, I mainly introduces the research background, research purpose and research methods about independent documentary. In the second chapter, I mainly sort out the historical materials in the forming stage of documentary film, analyzing the causes of the formation about the independent characteristics, as well as the various elements photographer need to complete to express independently. Through the combination of xu tong’s "homeless trilogy" and other films,I try to analyze it’s difference from other films, lies in its emphasis on the person itself in real life and the photographer’s personalized expression. In the third chapter, combined with specific films, I analyze the influence to the space of expressing by theme selection, the audience positioning, and other elements. The fourth chapter is based on the analysis of former three chapters, possible countermeasures are put forward, combined with the specific successful experience in shooting and distribution at home and abroad.Then I hope to know how they can express independently and expend their express space at the same time. In the new Internet environment and the reality of the movie censorship relaxed environment, what’s the new development opportunities and challenges they are facing, and how to deal with. Finally, I use a transcript about the interview to a independent documentary filmmaker and a folk exhibitor to help the readers know about the profession better. In the second and third chapter, I have also cited some interviews content to verify and supplement the relevant theory in the article, making the interviews and the content merge well.
