“The Shanghai girls” derive from the film of the same name. The Shanghai Girl was produced by Beijing film studio. The Shanghai girls in this thesis refer to a special kind of female image that appeared in Chinese movies in 1957. The Shanghai Girl、The Nurse Diaries、City Without Night、Woman Basketball Player No.5 appeared collectively in 1957 which showed the new regime’s expectation and sculpture for women in the early years of the new nation. Explore the characteristics of the Shanghai girls through the text analysis of the four films. Specific content is divided into three chapters as follows.The first chapter mainly introduces the background of the Shanghai girls’ appearance. In 1957, the Chinese private film companies have all nationalized and the film policy was serving for workers, peasants and soldiers. The movie creation was influenced by the Soviet Union and the movie production was examined by complicated procedures. Given this background, how the four films were produced and repercussions about the four films.In the second chapter, research on the text of the four films to conclude the Shanghai girls’ features: revolutionary、modernity、Female consciousness. First, the directors of the four movies grew up in the revolution and war times, the film aesthetics in the Seventeen years is revolutionary realism and the films portrayed a group of Shanghai girls who dedicated themselves to the socialist construction selflessly. The conclusion is:The Shanghai girls are revolutionary. There are two aspects of Shanghai girls’ modernity: the first aspect is the modernity of the external image and the way of life; the second aspect is the spirit of the new socialist people. In the Seventeen years, female consciousness is in a state of invisible, but through the text analysis of the four films, female consciousness is still can be found in Shanghai girls. This is extremely valuable.The third chapter analyzes the four movies’ narrative mode and the impact of Shanghai on Shanghai girls. The narrative mode of The Shanghai Girl and The Nurse Diaries is: revolution + love; the narrative mode of City Without Night and Woman Basketball Player No.5 is: remould + growth. In the early years of the new nation, Shanghai became synonymous with the bourgeoisie, the Shanghai girls with revolutionary ideals had a sense of violation with the city, so they want to escape from the corrupt city.
