The study object of my paper is the Black Paintings of Francisco Goya who is a Spanish painter. Goya was the most influential painter in the period between 18th and 19th century. He was growing in the context of traditional art in Europe, but in the end. he gave up the realistic way of painting. Then he successfully created many amazing works, which influenced the later generations of artists and genres of art.The elderly Goya reached his heyday between 1819 and 1823. He painted a series of representative works named Black Paintings. This paper argues that the creation of the Black Paintings is the last heyday in Goya’s art career, it brings together the accumulated experience of creation in the life of the painter, whose forms of language are more distinctive and spiritual connotation are deeper. On the one hand, he fully released and expressed the long-suppressed emotion and artistic wisdom. Goya took the large area of dark color on the painting to express feeling and construction, and the way of painting broke the stereotype of classical picture construction, which makes the audience gain a huge sense of immediacy from the picture. On the other hand, multiple spiritual space under Goya’s work not only implies his exclamation about the hypocrisy of human beings and the fragility of life, but also provide the painting with the aesthetic quality of tragic art. The themes such as reality, religion and myths and indicating ways such as the exaggeration, sarcasm, symbolism and metaphor have all revealed Goya’s internal spirit of insanity, loneliness and fright of people.I think the study for art history is a constant and in-depth process. A lot of works and research has witnessed the advent of value of Black Paintings, and it is extremely open that the study focuses on the interpretation of meaning and aesthetic characteristics of Goya’s paintings. I hope to regard Black Paintings as a study object. By combining the existing historical materials with research achievements, I will try to explore the origin of Black Paintings, and interpretation in the form of linguistic features from analysis of Goya’s work, and analyzes the tragedy of the Black Paintins aesthetic connotation, to promote the cognition of Black Paintings aesthetic value, in order to a deeper understanding of the Black Paintings series of artistic achievement and profound influence.
