Francisco de Goya is a famous painter of Spanish court, who acquires excellent success in varies respects, such as carpet design, oil painting, engraving and fresco etc.His fresco Black Painting series, which preserved in the two chambers of his final residence, are the summit of his artistic career. No titles, no description, even not any of his letters mentioned them. Goya employed the same means of fresco and painted them directly on the wall. He didn’t care if they will peel off soon. He created the artwork for himself, never take into consider of the feeling of specters. Black painting series represent the psychology course of Goya, contains his thinking about the reason, the war and the fortune of humanity, which is far-retching and elevates the painting to a level of philosophy.This thesis combines the background of his time and the deaf of his healthy situation, and tries to explore the meaning of these fourteen Black Paintings, which are fantastic and charming, by the means of iconology. It traces back to the figures recourses, such as witches, fairies, priests, madmen, etc., and it analysis the society of his own time, seeks to find the inner clue of Black Painting series as a whole, inseparable.
