Tracing Professor Sun Ying’s life and work, this M.A. dissertation aims at exploring the cultural connotation of Chinese Classical Dance in the style of Han & Tang Dynasties he has recreated and dealing with its background and conditions, as well as his educational philosophy and artistic contribution. His life went up and down, but all this troubles have led to his successful reconstruction of this dance style in his later years.Since time immemorial, all artistic works reflect artists’thought. Therefore, this author carefully selected three of his choreographies, thoroughly analyzed their styles and characteristics, cultural background and connotations, and eventually proposed the conclusion that the Chinese Classical Dance in the style of Han & Tang Dynasties is the real Chinese Classical Dance.Finally, the author describes the cultural significances of this particular dance. First of all, it is a heritage of the Chinese classical culture in order to let more people know and appreciate our classical culture, and to remind the world not be ungrateful. Secondly, lots of his choreographies play resonance effects from points to areas and from individuals to groups, produce more aesthetic appeal, make each of his choreographies beyond itself and as a cultural icon.
