A Report On The Translation Of Abstracts In Ningxia Social Science

With the development of reform and opening up, higher education institutes and local social science academies has published many research papers. These papers are very important in spreading of research results. In addition, most of them require the publisher to provide corresponding English abstracts which help our research move towards internationalization. However, as informative texts which effect the communication of academic results, the translation of abstracts has not got enough attentions from researchers.This report is based on the C-E translation practice of abstracts in Ningxia Social Science. The translation project is conducted by stages and the author has translated nine times periodically, totally more than 18000 words. The report discusses several questions through the introduction of project and case studies, such as how to define the functions and readers of translation through the translational preparations; how to clearly deliver the meanings of original contexts through language transformations and how to dedicate responsibility and professional qualities in the process of translation.In the report, the author selected his translation strategies on the analysis of translation’s function and its transmitting modes. In case studies, the author discussed the translation methods and technologies from three perspectives:words, sentences and discourses. In the word level, the author talked the selection, foreignization and domestication of words. In the sentences level, the author talked the selection of tense and voice, adjustments of word order and transformations of structures. In the discourse level, the author talked reference, omission, substation and lexical cohesions. In the process of this translation program, the author kept contacts with the entrusting party by informing the tempo of project and providing solutions for the problems occurred.As the report reveals, translation is not just the transformation of contexts, it is an interactive activity related with languages and cultures. The translator should pay attentions in every step, such as the reproductions of source languages, the functions of translated versions and the requirements of entrusting party. The report was done to provide experience and reference for latter abstracts translations.
