Mood demonstrates speaker’s subjective consciences such as emotion, attitude, assessment, description towards on others, events, situations and environment via certain grammatical form. Modal particle is one of the most important grammatical form that can express mood. As a vernacular language, the meaning of modal particle is hard to describe, therefore, studies on modal particle is always the crucial and difficult part of linguistic research.This thesis selects modal particles d212, o42,o212, ni55,ne55, me55 and xoe55 in Kaiyuan dialect at research object to depict their distribution characteristics, mood meanings and to explore as well as compare their basic mood meanings so as to demonstrate their localism. As the author, I hope this thesis can promote the study of modal particles in Kaiyuan dialect and offer some new findings and perspective for studying modal particle.This thesis composes by three parts.The first part is introduction which states the overview of Kaiyuan dialect and its study. In the first part, I analyses previous study on the characteristics of modal particles of Yunnan dialect, previous research history on the modal particles of Mandarin, research result and research method as well as the purpose, meaning and method of this research.The second part take d212, o42,o212, ni55,ne55, me55 and xce55 as research objects to study their distribution characteristics and their mood meanings then analyses and summarizes their basic mood meanings.The third part is last chapter. In this part, the study is based on the discussion on the previous part to analyses the difference and connection of these five modal particles in the middle and the end of declarative sentences, question sentences, exclamatory sentences and imperative sentences which can comprehensively demonstrate their meaning and localism.
