In 21 st Century, the diversification of information media has promoted the cultural exchanges between countries and expanded their children’s global perspective to a great extent. Picture books-the children’s best friend and teacher of enlightenment and wisdom-take much responsibility for how to define their identities under the impact of multicultural vision. However, the majority of in China are imported from abroad and then the original ones accounted for less than 20%. Our children have immersed themselves in Western culture through those foreign picture books, which enhances the overall aesthetic ability but brings an ignorance of the national culture. Therefore, we should attach great importance to studying and developing Chinese original picture books and try to create works consistent with the national conditions.Based on the characteristics of children’s visual perception psychological development as well as the current situations of picture books’ creation in China, this paper focuses on rules and techniques of visual language expression in Chinese contemporary picture books from such elements as texts, graphs and colors, and further studies the differing ways Chinese folk art elements make their ways into picture books. Inthe audio-visual era, the survival and development of picture books is facing new opportunities and challenges, so their creation has to foster strengths and circumvent weaknesses, advance with the times and achieve innovation on the basis of inheriting excellent culture. Only in a full combination of the characteristics of the times and the expression of the traditional culture can Chinese picture books, contemporary and prospective, achieve their sustainable development and make for the extension and development of national culture.
