In the early 1980 s, Zhao Benfu went on the literary world, since his first novel “selling donkey”, nearly all of his works are set on land in which he grew up---Feng Pei Plains and the old Yellow river. Thirty years engaged in literature creation, he has built an unnoticeable but attentive world of the old Yellow river in his writing. Though Feng Pei Plains is not so famous as Gao Mi in Shan Dong province, it has its own characteristics, providing the Chinese modern literature with a taste of countryside as well as adding a bright light to countryside literature. This thesis focuses on Zhao Benfu’s works and his views on literature, as well as the development in writing. What’s more, I will further analyze the characteristics and contributions of Zhao Benfu’s novel based on countryside. The main body of my thesis is divided into three parts. The first chapter will conclude Zhao’s literary view and discuss his understanding of story-telling and the methods in writing. Zhao’s view on literature is utilitarianism. He holds the view that the essence of literature is idealism. Though he has discussed various methods in writing, the most familiar one to him is realism. The second chapter mainly discussed the change of connotation in the old Yellow river Zhao himself has built. My viewpoint is that the connotation has been developed gradually in Zhao’s writing over last thirty years. Early in literary world, he aimed to reflect the current situation in rural areas and the fate of the farmers. He obeyed the policy that literature served politics, submitting to the popular view towards politics and society. Thus, problems in rural areas stood out but without his own understanding of old Yellow river. In 1984,Zhao was admitted to the writing-training class in Association of Writers in China, whose name is Lu Xun Literature College now. The training is critical in his writing career. He gradually changed the attitude to Feng Pei plains in which he lived for over thirty years but leaving till for a long time. His writing is transformed by the power of reform and modernization in China as well as Wang Zengqi’s works. After leaving college, Zhao began to think rationally and attempted to reappear his rural landscape by a moremetaphysical way, so he paused his writing for a long time. In the subsequent Mother of Earth, he displayed the complicated relationships over hundreds of years between people and the land using the form of allegory. He regarded people as a sort of species in the world, revealing the marvelous land hovering in his mind. In the third chapter, I mainly concentrate on the characteristics of Zhao’s Chinese building, featuring humor words, leisure expression and allegorical relating, which exposes Zhao Benfu’s pursuit to diversification.
