As an important kiln site in the Liao and Jin Dynasties in Chinese history and one of the “seven kilns in five capital cities” in the two dynasties, Gangguantun Kiln in Liaoyang was in operation for over 300 years from Liao through Jin to Yuan Dynasty.The kiln site was great in scale and vast in space, producing varieties of ceramics of different shapes and glazes in its many kilns. The ceramic art of Gangguantun Kiln in Liaoyang is an important part of Liao and Jin ceramics, the representation of the culture and art of the nomadic people in that period, and an academic treasure in the history of Chinese ceramics.This research makes a comprehensive study and discussion of Gangguantun Kiln in Liaoyang, Liaoning and its unearthed ceramics based on field investigations and literature analyses, and explains their artistic features to reveal their internal cultural and artistic values. A focus is also placed on the artistic expression to explain and analyze the glaze, decorative features, patterns, shapes, production skills and the relationship among these artistic features and the historical, national and cultural backgrounds at the time.This paper is organized into these parts: the first part briefly talks about the history and culture of the Khitan and Jurchen Nationalities and analyzes the cultural background of Gangguantun Kiln at the time. The second part briefly talks about the history and culture of Liaoyang in Liao and Jin Dynasties, analyzes the uniqueness of historical and cultural background of the location of Gangguantun Kiln and explains the reasons why the two dynasties set up the kiln in Liaoyang. The third part makes an introduction of the kiln and its unearthed ceramics. The fourth part sorts out and analyzes the artistic features of these unearthed ceramics and puts forwards several new points about the suggestion that the kiln could have produced ceramics for the court based on the inscriptions on these ceramics.
