[Abstract] As a distinctive news report category, crime news often probes deep into a prime crime, providing detailed description of the whole story and working as a warning to the public. Meanwhile, it also manifests real national law and court system to readers. China’s law systems is different from those in European and American countries, so Chinese readers would have a deeper and clearer understanding about foreign laws, crimes and society by reading crime reports. So the translation of such texts is of great significance. Communicative translation, raised by Peter Newmark, offers a relatively comprehensive way-to instruct the translation of different texts, taking the text, readers, translators, house style and other aspects into consideration. It combines translating theory with translation practice, and plays a very useful role in the translation of such kind of text. This paper analyzes the translation of Innocence Lost using communicative translation and proves the function of such a theory in the translation of crime reports.
