This thesis investigates Duan Yucai’s Correction in the Fifth Sections of Annotation to Shuowenjiezi (Duanzhu) by exhaustive collection of data, item-by-item check and classification. Shuowenjiezi(shuowen), writed by Xu Shen who is a outstanding person in the history of our language, is the first dictionary which comprehensively analysises the fonts and meanings of Chinese characters. Through hundreds of years, many errors come to exist. Aimed to restore its original appearance, Duan Yucai systematically corrected Shuowen on the basis of philology and other disciplines. He made a number of corrections of Shuowen and he also tried to reveal personal theory of Chinese language and Chinese character, which is of great value.Taking the Shuowen which is published in 1963 compared with Duanzhu in the fifth part, we found 148 differences which we call the "Corrections" as the object of this thesis. After summarizing those "Corrections", we divided them into three types:Correction with words; Correction without words; Correction within words. Under the each chaper, the Corrections can be categorized into five types depending on the content:to correct the shape of the character; to correct the meaning of the character; to correct the structure analysis and pronunciation analysis of the character; to correct the quotation of character. On the basis of this classification, we make some analysis one by one. The final part is to summarize the three categories and point out its significances and shortages. As many special characters appearing in this part, I try to analysis some of them combined with examples and in order to know more about Duan Yucai’s thoughts of language.
