The mechanical manual both has the characteristics of the technical text and practical writing. The standard of C-E mechanical manual translation is higher than other types. The language in mechanical manuals translation is accurate and standard, while it also can instruct the operation and transform the information. For the above features, translators should be equipped with professional knowledge and strong ability of translating in order to produce a translation in mechanical manuals of high quality. This paper is to discuss the translation of mechanical manuals from the perspective of Spokos Theory. Combined with the author’s translation practice in the power station, this thesis analyzes the operative mechanical manual translation with the aid of German Skopotheorie. The original text introduces the operation and maintenance of the unloader and coal-crusher. In order to realize the function of the original text, the translation practice is mainly based on the principles of translation skopos theory. Skopos theory is the most important theory of German functional theory. According to the main idea of Skopos theory, ranslators should bear in mind what the expected function of translation text is. Consequently, the choice of translation strategies(adjustment, omission, rewrite etc.) is decided by the purpose of the translation text, in order to achieve a standard, coherent text. The source text mainly introduced the operation and maintain of unloader and coal crusher, in order to guide the operation of workers in daily life. In order to realize the function of source text, at the guidance of Skopos theory, this translation report will be divided into five parts. Chapter one makes a brief introduction of this translation practice and explain the economic and academic meaning of this practice. Chapter two explains the process of the translation, such as looking up papers to summarize the features of mechanical manuals, accumulating some technical terms in order to make a good preparation of translation. Chapter three focus on the core concept and main ideas of Spokos theory, which provides the theory structure of mechanical manuals translation. Chapter four will analyzes the examples from the perspective of Skopos theory, and puts forward a good quality translation version. At last, through the above discussion on the translation of mechanical manuals, the paper summarizes involved translation strategies and call for more attention to the issue of translating mechanical operation manuals.
