"Rhapsody in Blue" is a piano concerto created by American pianist George Gershwin in 1924. George Gershwin, known for his blend of traditional and pop music and his talent in introducing the Jazz to the Classic music, is one of the most typical composers. As a piano concerto, "Rhapsody in Blue" has its special characteristics because of the adding of the Jazz music elements, so this work forms a Jazz music with a style of the symphony. The Jazz music elements in this work provide the foundation for the further research on the American Jazz. This work of certain innovativeness and research values plays an important role in the piano concerto.The paper takes the "Rhapsody in Blue" as the object of research. Firstly, George Gershwin’s life and the historical background of this work are introduced in order to making the fulfill preparation for a deeper analyses. The emphasis of this paper is the explanation of the artistic features of this work by the using the Jazz elements in the musical language which provides a theoretical basis for playing. This thesis can be divided into three chapters: the first chapter analyses George Gershwin’s life and the inevitability of "Rhapsody in Blue"; the second chapter discusses the musical structure and art features of this work from the aspects of the mode, tonality, harmony, melody, rhythm and speed which provides a theoretical basis for playing skills the next chapter mentioned; the third chapter is the performance annotation which is analyzed from the cooperation of the band and the playing techniques of the Jazz. In the playing techniques of the Jazz, the meter, pedal, strength and several playing difficulties, such as the chords playing with long span, the process of rapid Toccata and the process of the speed and emotion are analyzed emphatically.By the research on the relevant cultural background and the art features of George Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue", the writer will provides a basis for a better p laying, teaching and creation.
