The significance of space has been reasserted in the20th century along with the shift of philosophical studies on it. The relationship between space and post-modernity have been born by several scholars thereof. In post-modern contexts, the spatial diversity in postmodern society carves profoundly the way we behave and reason, and so far as to impress our reconstruction and representation of space Our experience acquired in postmodern space would definitely imprint indelible brand on the creation of poetry. Therefore this thesis shall put an emphasis on the topic of the diversification of modern poetry in the case of postmodern space based on the idea of space. How does modern poetry acquire its unique form as it is? What is the distinction between the creation of modern poetry and that in the previous era? What makes modern poetry "posf"-modern? This dissertation would seek for the variation of cross-strait poetry in a case of analyzing certain poems on the basis of previous work by western scholars on the theme of modern space as well as Raymond Willies’ structures of feeling.The Introduction presents how space theory is applied in the study of literature, displays the close connection between post-modern and space itself, and thus proposes that it is reasonable as well as necessary to interpret the post-modernity of modern cross-strait poetry from the perspective of space. Several concepts would be defined herein, such as postmodern space, modern poetry, post-modernity and structures of feeling on which this dissertation lays its foundation.Chapter One explores the variation of cross-strait poetry production in the circumstances of postmodern planarization from three perspectives, i.e. the shift of focus from "the moment" to "the current", the changing pattern of "wanderers" to "spirit", the rise and fall of Utopia.In Chapter Two, the author illustrates the space logic in postmodern globalization, the transformation of cross-strait poetry production from the opposition of urban vis-a-vis rural area to the dialectic relationship between "local" and "global" Nevertheless, poets are impelled to attach importance to the specialty of "local" under the influence of global homogenization.Chapter Three presents that cross-strait poetry have been on the exploration of virtual space and the dialectical and orgiastic inclination of the creation of poems, taking Cyberspace for instance, on the subject of its remolding effects on our space-time perception from the perspective of virtual features of postmodern space.In the Conclusion the author summarizes the postmodern features of modern poetry, his reflections upon the previous studies of the impact of space to modern poetry, and presents the authorial prediction about the development of modern poetry in the postmodern circumstances.
