Pun as a figure of speech uses a word or phrase to express two meanings: literalmeaning and connotational meaning. What’s more, as one of the very importantfigures of speech, pun occupies a great place in Chinese and English rhetoric figures.However, it doesn’t mean that puns are completely equivalent in Chinese and English.They have many similarities but in many ways they are different, for example:definition, categories and rhetoric function etc. If we would not learn about thesimilarities and differences between Chinese and English, we would bring sometroubles in cross-cultural communication.Through contrastive studies of Chinese shuangguan and English pun, the thesiscan widen the vision of pun learner so that the category is wider and wider, andliterature translator have a profound understanding of different national ways ofthinking, value concepts and aesthetic concepts so that they can better master thecharacteristics of Chinese and English and translate them; and make second languageteacher combine contrastive studies between Chinese and English with teaching workso that it can help students study language and learn culture. All in all, the thesis canmake language learner better learn and master the similarities and differences betweenChinese and English so as to language speaker can better use it.The paper is divided into six parts. It begins with the introduction and tells thereason why I adopt the contrastive study to discuss shuangguan and pun. The secondchapter is theoretical part, which lays a solid theoretical basis from theChinese-English contrast and context perspective. The three chapters summarizes andclassifies Chinese shuangguan and English pun in A Dream of Red Mansion andRomeo and Juliet, and then on this basis the fourth chapter analyzes and comparesshuangguan and English pun respectively from the definition, types, key words andrhetoric function etc. On the basis of the classification and comparison, the fifthchapter summarizes the nature of shuangguan and pun from phonetic correlation,semantic ambiguity and double context. The sixth chapter summarizes research valueof this thesis mainly from two aspects of theoretical and practical implications, and sums up the discoveries, enlightenments, limitations and suggestions to the relatedresearch in future.
