Communication Barriers Caused By Cultural Differences In Escort Interpreting And Coping Strategie

With the rapid development of economy and implementation of the reform andopening-up policy, there are more and more economic activities and culturalexchanges between China and many other countries, which gives rise to thedevelopment of interpreting. Escort interpreting, as the most commonly used ininterpreting, plays an important role in cultural exchanges and business activities.Besides the communication in work, escort interpreting covers various areas such asaccompanying the clients to scenic spots, tasting the special snacks and learning aboutthe local customs and traditions.Escort interpreting is not only the transfer between words, but also the effectivecommunication of two cultures. So the cultural differences have become the biggestbarrier in escort interpreting. By studying escort interpreting on the basis of her ownexperience, the author explores the cultural differences and provides a few copingstrategies to solve the communication barriers caused by cultural differences. Allthese will make a contribution to the escort interpreting study and practice.Based on the project of2012International Furniture Fair Chengdu, the thesisintroduces the background information, preparation work and the process of theproject. Then the author assesses the interpreting performance on the perspective ofthe employer and herself, and pointed out the deficiencies in the interpreting.Furthermore, it analyzes the relationship between communication and culture. Then itsummarizes the communication barriers caused by cultural differences by analyzingthe differences in the fields of historical factor, social custom, religious beliefs, valuesystem and thinking model. The last part of the thesis provides strategies to cope withthe communication barriers so as to achieve effective communication.
