This report describes the author’s escort interpreting practice at the Fourteenth Apple Festival in Qixia, Shandong Province. It analyzes the whispered interpreting data from Chinese to English including the addresses at the opening ceremony and the toasts at the luncheon, and discusses difficulties encountered during the course of task as well as corresponding strategies and methods. In the task process, this report first describes “pre-interpreting preparation” that involves background information of this event, introduction of previous activities and related terminology, followed by description of task process which is divided into two parts, each with an introduction of characteristics and functions. In the case analysis, this report elaborates interpreting data from both linguistic and non-linguistic perspectives, a combination of some specific cases and features of this task, and summarizes difficulties and challenges encountered in the process of interpreting. The application of strategies, such as paraphrase and omission, literal translation and fully utilizing materials on site, are of significance to cope with linguistic difficulties. There are certain non-linguistic problems and challenges that are expounded from three aspects: changing roles of the interpreter, influence of no-script and intervention of surroundings. According to the case analysis and description, the author finds that a sufficient preparation prior to the practice, improving interpreting skills as well as cross-cultural competence play a positive role in overcoming non-linguistic difficulties and challenges. In the conclusion, the summary is of prime importance as a guidance for future practices, in which self-evaluation and related coping strategies of interpreting cultural information are discussed. The author hopes that her interpreting experience could provide references for other student interpreters and help them perform better in similar practices.
