Grand Chinese Dictionary is by far the largest collection of Chinese characters and the most comprehensive interpretation dictionary. On the principle of absorbing elements from both ancient and modern times and attaching great importance to its origin as well as its development, it totally collects fifty-six thousand characters (up to over sixty thousand in the Second Edition), which focuses on the character and also considers the form, pronunciation and meaning, historically and objectively reflecting the evolution of Chinese characters. With the ancient and modern content, Grand Chinese Dictionary widely absorbs ancient and current research achievements on the text, phonology, exegesis and other aspects. This paper takes Grand Chinese Dictionary, the most authoritative reference book of Chinese Philology study, as the window to discuss the development of philology during the period of the Republic of China through analyzing the philology works quoted in Grand Chinese Dictionary and expound the role of "the Republic of China" playing in the philology development history.The paper consists of six chapters. The first chapter, introduction, mainly summarizes the study about reference situation of Grand Chinese Dictionary for recent thirty years and explains the significance of this issue. The second chapter counts the situation of Republic of China philology works referred by Grand Chinese Dictionary, then classifies into three categories:Shuowen works, Jiaguwen works and Jinwen works. The third, fourth and fifth chapter expounds respectively according to such classification standards. By taking form-decomposing part of individual character as main study object, each chapter overviews the philology works cited in Grand Chinese Dictionary and illustrates the related items to discuss the new development of the traditional Shuowen during the period of the Republic of China and Jiaguwen and Jinwen-oriented paleography development with the specific examples. The sixth chapter is the conclusion.
