Grand Chinese Dictionary (called "Big Dictionary" for short) is a largelanguage reference book that gathers numerous scholar's strenuous efforts in 80's for 20centuries, which symbolizes the research about Chinese language and the compilaton ofChinese language dictionary across up a new step. However, because of long writingtime, involving aspects widely, numerous compilers and so on, Grand ChineseDictionary is also hard to avoid some shortages, even though it inherited predecessors'friuts and hoped for bringing forth new ideas.In recent years, some scholars have already written articles to correct GrandChinese Dictionary. However, these articles are limited by elucidation concreteproblems of Grand Chinese Dictionary. They have not standed on the certain height todiscover and analyze these shortages. According to this problem which people researchin the past, this article would carry on examining and analyzing the content of GrandChinese Dictionary from the angle of the relation between form and meaning, namely,taking "the unity between form and meaning" principle as standard. We hope the acticlewould have benefit with revision of Grand Chinese Dictionary and compilation andrevision of other dictionaries in the future.The biggest characteristic of Chinese characters lies in that chinese characterscould express meaning, that is to say: the form and meaning of Chinese characters areunited. No matter earlier or later Chinese characters, people all hope they are clear inmeaning and observable directly, which make people know the meaning if people see acharacter. Philologists in the past, such as Xu Shen, Duan Yu-cai, Yang Shu-da alsoresearched meanings of chinese characters according to the characteristic of "the unitybetween form and meaning" mostly, and therefore did huge contribution. Grand ChineseDictionary is a large dictionary which takes explaining Chinese characters' meanings asmain mission, so, we could completely investigate shortages according to thischaracteristic. Taking "the unity between form and meaning" as standard, not only caninvestigate shortages of Grand Chinese Dictionary in original meaning, but also caninvestigate problems about derived meaning and handling loan character. The article taking "the unity between form and meaning" as standard has carriedon an overall investigation to Grand Chinese Dictionary and found some shortages, wedivided these shortages into two major types: in definition, some original meanings inGrand Chinese Dictionary are wrong; the other shortage is compilers of Grand ChineseDictionary mistaked loan meaning to derived meaning. In entry, there are some falseentries in Grand Chinese Dictionary because editors didn't use the standard that "theunity between form and meaning" to handle annotations in ancient books. The other isthat one entry is often divided to two or three entries.In a word, this article has analyzed shortages of Grand Chinese Dictionary taking"the unity between form and meaning" as standard. Not only it has the theories basis,but also is viable on the fulfillment. The article provides an important standard foremendation of Grand Chinese Dictionary. Taking this as basis, we can avoid manyproblems about contents disunity, improve the quality of Grand Chinese Dictionary andpromise revising work progresses smoothly.
