College English Teaching has undergone the history for more than20years. Thedevelopment of the times has put the dissemination of Chinese Culture on a new agenda. However, in the daily teaching activities, because of the influence from factors such as theteaching materials, the quality of teachers, the syllabus, the course setting, College EnglishTeaching has overemphasized the learning of the target culture, ignoring home culture-thelearning of Chinese Culture. Such practice has resulted in Chinese Cultural Aphasia put forthby Professor Cong Cong in Guangming Daily in2000, that is, failure to express ChineseCulture in English in intercultural communication. While intercultural communication is atwo-way activity, which demands the mutual communication from both parties. The loss ofhome culture only results in the imbalance of intercultural communication, which goesagainst the cultivation of students’ competence of intercultural communication coupled withthe dissemination of Chinese Culture worldwide. Therefore, the content of Chinese Cultureshould be incorporated into College English Teaching. Only in this way can the students’awareness of intercultural communication be improved as well as ICC and the overall qualitybe strengthened. This paper mainly aims to explore the current situation of Chinese Culture in CollegeEnglish Teaching. The author has selected258students with five majors and40teachers ofForeign Language Departent as the subjects, both of which are from Tangshan NormalUniversity. Three instruments have been employed. The first one is the widely-usedtextbook-NHCE (2ndEdition), which has been classified and compared in terms of thecultural content, esp. that of Western culture and Chinese Culture. The second is a test, whichcontains20items of Chinese Culture-specific translation, aiming at probing into the students’expressiveness of Chinese Culture in English. The third one is the questionnaire with thepurpose of exploration of the attitudes and awareness of both students and teachersconcerning the dissemination of Chinese Culture. Through the systematic analysis of thecurrently widely-used textbook-NHCE (2nd edition), it is found that no matter Reading andWriting or Listening and Speaking, the textbook of compiling is target culture-oriented. At thesame time, Chinese Culture is not disseminated systematically and effectively and it is nearly at the edge of ignorance. Through the test and the questionnaire, it is found that the students’ability of expressiveness of Chinese Culture in English is generally quite poor; bycomparison, it has revealed that in terms of the test, the performance of the students of GradeTwo is obviously better than that of Grade One; the same story applies to the students of Artsand Science. Interestingly, the data illustrates that the translation competence of studentsregarding Chinese Culture-specific is not closely positively related with whether the studentsare winners or losers of CET-4. The result of the questionnaire has reflected that the students’autonomous learning awareness towards Chinese Culture needs further improvement. Theteachers commonly hold that their mastery of Chinese Culture is far from enough, and theyneed badly to further the learning on it.
