This thesis tries to make a research on all attributive adjectives in Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (the fifth, sixth edition). By using the statistical method and analytic method, we hold the opinion that the so-called "attributive adjective" is not a unitary part of speech, and this conclusion can be deduced from related theory researches or be proved by the statistical facts. In fact, there is no unified and distinctive grammatical feature that can support the attributive adjectives to be an independent part of speech in part-of-speech system in modern Chinese, and the attributive adjective also should not be attached to the adjective. Therefore, the part-of-speech system in modern Chinese has problem. According to our studies, we found that, grammatical functions of the615attributive adjectives can be classified into three classes in terms of word whether can be used frequently as attributive or not. The three categories are as follows:the major function is used as attributive, the secondary function is used as attributive, the sole function is used as attributive. They require further classifications according to the grammatical feature and semantic feature of different word. In an overall analysis of grammatical feature of every word, this paper reclassifies all attributive adjectives into different parts of speech such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, the distinguishing words, quantifiers and so on. In view of this, we have suggested that Contemporary Chinese Dictionary should cancel "attributive adjectives" and reestablish a new part-of-speech system in the seventh edition in order to make the system more perfect and its part-of-speech tagging method more scientific and standardized. At the end of this paper, we make further analysis on the causes and developments of these attributive adjectives.
