The author aims to explore the unique features of TV SI and the coping strategies. Not only the challenges for TV interpreters, but also the users’expectations towards the interpreting output and the technology involved, all differ greatly from conference interpreting. The author discusses the definitions, history and development, feasibility and quality criteria, as well as other dimensions of TV SI. The author takes the integrated approach of combining the analyses of survey results with case studies to look into the possible coping strategies for interpreters. The author conducts the sampling survey on professional interpreters in China, who are actively involved in TV SI, to identify the unique features of TV SI. Results of the survey are analyzed specifically. Representative cases of TV SI in Chinese TV programs are studied as well.Besides, this paper explores the professionalization of TV SI from different perspectives. Considering the existing problems in TV SI, TV producers and interpreters should strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation for consensual resolution. Although at the infant stage in China, TV SI is a niche market with unexploited potentials; it is sure to boom and thrive in the future.
