Simultaneous interpreting (SI) on TV can be defined as the transformation of messages via the image and sound on TV with the aid of Simultaneous interpreting. With the advancement of communication technology and the high quality demand of information dissemination, SI on TV has been widely used in the live coverage of major events. Due to its unique features, such as news oriented, unique working mechanism and high intensity, SI on TV faces many difficulties. At present, researches on SI on TV in China have been carried on at a slow pace. Some theories and coping strategies are still in primary stage. In order to improve the quality of SI on TV, the present thesis conducts a case study of the simultaneous interpreting of "2012Third U.S. Presidential Debate" based on Daniel Gile’s Effort Model, and makes a comparative study between the two interpretation versions respectively offered by Phoenix TV and CNN. This thesis combines the theoretical analysis with the practice, aiming at proposing some coping strategics for SI on TV. Some common deteriorations in SI on TV are highlighted, including lost of information and erroneous information, ignore the acceptance of the audiences and lack of communication with other TV staff. Possible reasons are pointed out, including insufficient extra-linguistic knowledge and insufficient mental energy for each effort. Online and offline strategies to deal with the problems are proposed. This thesis combines the theoretical analysis with real cases of TV interpreting. On one hand, based on the study of interpreting and communication, the common errors in SI on TV and their reasons are analyzed. On the other hand, by analyzing the specific examples in "2012Third U.S. Presidential Debate", the thesis put forwards some coping strategies in ligh of the four efforts in Gile’s effort model and shows its practical value.
