Recently, translation textbooks for English majors are flourishing in the market, in which most ofthem represent the problem of “how to translate” with the contents of translation techniques. It is seen that more and more attention are paid to translation theories whether they are thepure theories or applied theories. Mu Lei (1999) pointed out that based on large amount of practice, thehistory of translation theories, the standard, the school of translation theories should be taught tostudents in the teaching process. The main point for this thesis is how to arrange the reasonabletranslation course books and what theories should be taught in order to make translation theories andpractice closely related, and to convey the necessary translation techniques to guide students learningand further improve their translation capacity. This thesis firstly analyzes the status quo of translation textbooks in Chinese market and introducesthe situation of translation theories at home and abroad. This study takes the comparative approach toanalyze the several common and welcomed translation course books in China to find their advantagesand disadvantages in the theoretical construction by analyzing and sorting them. The author asked some English majors for the third grade in Shanxi province for filling in simplequestionnaires about their attitude and requirements to translation coursebooks, translation theories andtranslation teaching. Then, the author finds out that the most important theory in the translation textbookis the contrastive approach between English and Chinese.
